Learn why three very different college students, each with their own unique priorities, chose to become Xcel Energy interns.
- When Morad was seeking internship prospects, finding an innovative company focused on the technology of the future was important.
- Alex was drawn to the opportunity of doing meaningful work at a company with a strong commitment to ethical behavior and customer service.
- Lizette was looking to earn money for college and also have good job prospects after graduation.
Xcel Energy interns receive valuable real-world job experiences, opportunities to tour company facilities and the challenge of taking on projects outside of their immediate job duties. They gain not just a paycheck, but valuable skills that will help them build a career at Xcel Energy, or anywhere.
“Last summer, my fellow Xcel Energy interns and I were able to map out all the current solar farms in Minnesota, and our data is now on the Xcel Energy website,” Alex said. “This experience has prepared me for my future career by providing me with the technical background needed to continue to work in the power industry.”
Careers in the utility industry require extensive technical training. We’ve built a robust internship program to ensure the knowledge of our experienced workers is passed on to the next generation of Xcel Energy employees. Our internship program brings talented and diverse candidates into the company and prepares them for their future careers.
“Xcel Energy offers great opportunities to learn about modern utility technologies and how we are going to transfer to smart grid systems,” Morad said. “One of my most rewarding accomplishments here was working on a smart grid application that uses power flow studies to determine how many devices we need to deploy.”
Lizette started working for Xcel Energy in our customer call center to earn money for college. She decided to take an internship in her final year of school because she liked the company and wanted to take the next step in building a career here.
“Xcel Energy is a great company for interns,” Lizette said. “There are plenty of new learning opportunities every day. The employees are very knowledgeable and willing to teach their expertise to the interns. My career goal is to work myself up to management or even up to an executive.”
