Our interns bring the energy

More than a paycheck, valuable skills for a lifetime

There’s an old trope that interns are the company gopher, go-fer coffee, go-fer donuts, etc. That’s not the case at Xcel Energy. Our interns play an essential role in helping us remain our customers’ trusted energy provider. The electric and natural gas service we provide is a critical part of everyday life. If your service has ever been interrupted, you know what I mean.

Keeping the power on and the natural gas flowing is a complicated task and our employees require extensive training to perform their jobs well. To become a qualified journeyman lineman requires four years of on-the-job training as an apprentice. Our nuclear employees prepare for years in formal education and once they’ve been hired spend countless hours training and conducting drills to ensure they know how to respond to any situation. Those are just a couple of examples of the specialized knowledge required to work in the utility industry.

Thankfully, we have thousands of dedicated employees who have been with the company for over a decade or more. Their dedicated service helps us keep our reliability among the top in the nation. Like many other companies, we’re experiencing the wave of baby boomer retirements. We’ve built a robust internship program to ensure their knowledge is passed on to the next generation of Xcel Energy employees.

Our internship program brings talented and diverse candidates into the company and prepares them for their future careers. Our interns receive valuable real world job experiences, opportunities to tour company facilities, and the challenge of taking on projects outside of their immediate job duties. They gain not just a paycheck, but valuable skills that will help them build a career at Xcel Energy, or anywhere.

Our company’s success isn’t just linked to our employees, but also to the health of the communities we serve. That’s one reason we support job-readiness programs like STEP-UP Achieve, Right Track, DPS CareerConnect and Eau Claire Youth Apprentice. These programs give a leg up to young people by giving them valuable work experience, while also helping to boost employment opportunities for high school students in our communities. It’s an investment that pays back double by helping our communities thrive and providing Xcel Energy with a skilled workforce.

You can learn more about some of our interns and their experiences at Xcel Energy from the profiles we are posting this week on our LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages.

We’re in the midst of an energy transformation and I love riding the wave of change and telling our story along the way.
