Today is National Line Worker Appreciation Day, celebrated annually on July 10 by Xcel Energy, EEI and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). It’s a day to celebrate and showcase our line, meter and shop workers for the work they do day in and day out in every kind of weather to ensure our 3.5 million electricity customers have power. When requested, they also go beyond the call of duty and respond to requests for mutual aid, helping utilities across the country restore power after natural disasters hit.
Line Crew Foreman Dave Hoppe carries on a family legacy by becoming a lineman.
After 29 years with Xcel Energy, Journeyman Lineman Paul Lopez Sr. still looks forward to the everyday adventures of being a lineman.
“There’s the craft of doing line work – putting it up right, making it look good – making it solid for years,” says Garry Tullio, Overhead Working Foreman.
“You can be needed at any time,” said Derek Evenson, Journeyman Lineman. “It is a very rewarding feeling, to restore power to our customers.”
For Line Crew Foreman Brandon Zahn, the lineman trade, is “not just a job; it’s a way of life.”
