The Smart Way to Celebrate Spring Planting: Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig

Use landscape design with trees to bring your yard to life

Nothing is more inviting to the soul than that feeling of spring in the air. You know the signs, longer daylight hours, warming temperatures, landscape design on your mind and oh yes, the spectacular singing of birds again. It’s that sense that we may actually be out of the savage embrace of winter.

Good reasons to plan ahead for your gardening and landscape design. And by the looks of the Average Last Day of Frost Map, most of us are soon to be enjoying the onset of another growing season.

A perfect time to plant trees and lots of good reasons too!

Did you know? In the United States, there are more trees than there were 100 years ago. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), “Forest growth nationally has exceeded harvest since the 1940s. By 1997, forest growth exceeded harvest by 42 percent and the volume of forest growth was 380 percent greater than it had been in 1920.”

But that’s no reason to slow down. Trees are carbon eaters that can slow the increase of carbon dioxide that accumulates in our atmosphere. They have the unique ability to lock up large amounts of carbon in their wood through photosynthesis.

Enhance your landscape design this April by planting a tree

Trees not only provide beauty and cleaner air, they can also be strategically placed to provide shade and wind breaks to help your home be more efficient with energy all year. But before you start by digging, avoid any potential of an underground accident with a buried power or natural gas line by calling 8-1-1.

You may be surprised to learn that over time, utility pipelines may actually be closer to the surface then when they were installed.

Call 8-1-1 before you dig is a free service and so easy to use. And by the way, it’s the law.

Your advance call to 8-1-1 helps you learn where utility-owned lines and equipment are buried before you turn the earth. When you call 8-1-1, you’ll be connected with your state’s “one-call center,” which arranges, at no cost to you, for utilities like us to locate and mark our buried utilities in your dig area. So you can bring your landscape design to life.

We send a professional to locate our natural gas and electric lines. Please note that utilities are not able to locate lines that a customer installed and owns, such as a natural gas or electric line that provides fuel or power to an outdoor grill, lighting, etc. Learn more

Happy planting!
