Going Beyond the Yellow Ribbon

Helping families of military service members find resources

By: | September 26, 2017 8:20 pm

On Monday, Sept. 25, Xcel Energy Chairman, President and CEO Ben Fowke was joined by Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, Brigadier General, Johanna Clyborne, Minnesota National Guard, and a host of military veteran Xcel Energy employees to sign the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Proclamation. Minnesota Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is a comprehensive program that creates awareness for the purpose of connecting families of military service members with community support, training, services and resources.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton presented the proclamation to our CEO Ben Fowke, alongside Minnesota National Guard Brigadier General Johanna Clyborne, Beyond The Yellow Ribbon Founder Annette Kuyper, and a host of military veteran Xcel Energy employees.

In his comments, Gov. Dayton recognized the collective efforts of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program partners to build a network of support for service members, veterans and their families. Xcel Energy is proud to be a part of that community network, which is a continuation of our dedication to our military and veteran employees.

Our journey to become a Yellow Ribbon Company started with creating a steering committee and action plan. Our action plan calls for us to make continuous improvements to our veteran benefits and culture at the company and in our communities so that we can better serve those who are currently serving or have previously served in the Armed Forces.

Our commitment to veterans goes back much further than our involvement with Beyond the Yellow Ribbon. In 2013, we committed to bolstering our military hiring practices and set an annual goal of 10 percent of new hires being military veterans. We’ve reached that goal each year since then and exceeded it last year when 14 percent of our new hires were veterans.

Once those veterans are on the job, we provide continued support by ensuring a smooth transition and a welcoming environment; and we work hard to accommodate employees who are called up for deployment. We not only comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), but we exceed it by providing benefits and support beyond what USERRA requires.

We do this not just because it’s the right thing to do, but also because veterans are a great fit for Xcel Energy. They have outstanding technical skills, they are strategic thinkers and they are committed. It’s a win-win situation.
